In Celebration of Gabrielle's Second Birthday
"Up here where the air is sweet,
can you tell me how to, how to get to..."
wiggles make you wiggle
giggles explode from tummy tickles
"Sit right chere, Grandmom, right chere."
and I do, on the bench next to you
to watch you eat pieces of sweet mango
Pop Pop just cut
we try a conversation about the turkeys
crossing Deer Run Road yesterday
there were three
you remember so much
smart little girl ready to turn two
who loves Dora on her sippy cup, Diego and his rescue pack
how many times IĀ helped you
change the cast on Baby Jaguar's paw
put our pretend cakes in the big plastic oven
push the red cart full of fake food from the play room
to the living room
but never back
at least not with "teamwork"
years from now I know I'll still see you
in my mind's eye
by the lake
crystal studded in the high noon August sun
Mommy lifts you up from beneath the water
you surface smiling and blinking
your tiny body shining and dripping
a wet perfect gift from another realm
gulls circle squawking
sailboats bob in the background
from where I sit under the umbrella
I watch you waddle through the shallows
toward me
and I remember last night
before you went to bed
we were all in the kitchen
Daddy, Mommy, Nico, Pop Pop, me
like planets drawn toward a sun
we orbited around you to kiss you goodnight
your small soft arms felt strong on the back of my neck
"Family hugs, family hugsss"
you held on to that last consonant as long as we held
onto each other
and beyond the sliding glass doors the large moon rose
in the dark sky
a last perfect luninescent balloon set adrift
above our love
on the close of your second birthday
